The Atlanta Chiefs outdoor soccer team was founded in 1967 as a charter member of the National Professional Soccer League, which later merged with the United Soccer Association to from the North American Soccer League in 1968. In 1973, the club was sold and renamed the only to fold after that season. The Chiefs were revived in 1979 when the Colorado Caribous moved to town and resurrected the old nickname.
